“again I am torn between the necessity and the impossibility of answering”
- Italo Calvino
Rooted in jazz sensibilities yet transcending genre boundaries, Many Worlds marks a significant milestone in Kevin Metzger’s musical journey. Following a harrowing car accident in 2017 that nearly cost him his ability to play guitar, Metzger began a years-long process of rediscovering his artistic voice. The result is a visionary exploration that blends elements of jazz, rock, and classical music into a cohesive, progressive-minded odyssey.
Joining Metzger is longtime friend and fellow improviser R. Aaron Walters, whose dual role as pianist and drummer brings a rare synchronicity to the project. Together, they navigate a rich soundscape of original compositions and reimagined works by iconic artists such as Keith Jarrett, The Grateful Dead, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The album also features a compelling interpretation of a duo sonata by Johann Sebastian Bach, showcasing the duo’s deep respect for classical tradition.
Many Worlds is not only a testament to Metzger’s resilience and creative vision, but also a celebration of the enduring musical bond between him and Walters. Both originally from Syracuse, NY, their decades-long friendship serves as the foundation for this release.
For Metzger, Many Worlds marks his debut full-length recording; a culmination of years of growth, reflection, and reinvention. For Walters, it represents a meaningful new chapter in his collaborative work, following his 2015 SAMMY Award-winning album Sea of Gold with Early Bird Trio.
